Is the Cao Bang Loop Worth Visiting? A Guide for First-Time Riders

Yes, for most riders. The Cao Bang Loop takes you to Ban Gioc Waterfall, through grassy hills and limestone valleys, on roads that are much quieter than Ha Giang’s. Tours start at $94 for two days. If all you want is Ha Giang’s most famous viewpoints, Ha Giang is still the better pick. For everyone else, here is what the Cao Bang Loop offers and what to expect before you book.

What Is the Cao Bang Loop?

The Cao Bang Loop is a 2 to 3-day ride through Vietnam’s northeast that starts and ends in Cao Bang City. The route runs past limestone hills, rivers and open pastures, and finishes at Ban Gioc Waterfall on the China border. It’s the quieter, less touristy cousin of the Ha Giang Loop. You can ride it on your own bike, behind an Easy Rider driver or in a jeep, and it links up with Ha Giang if you want to do both in one trip.

Why Choose the Cao Bang Loop?

The waterfall is the main reason. Ban Gioc is often called the largest transnational waterfall in Asia, and our tours reach it in the late afternoon, when the light is warmest. You ride a bamboo raft right up to the foot of the falls. Our Ban Gioc raft guide covers prices, tickets and safety.

The loop also packs in plenty for two or three days, and it’s much quieter. Guests who add Cao Bang to a Ha Giang trip often say it became their favourite part. Groups stay small and sleep in family-run homestays.

The downsides: there’s no single postcard stop like Ma Pi Leng Pass, and the day bus from Hanoi takes about 6 hours. Wetter months can bring showers. If you’d rather see Ha Giang’s famous viewpoints, read our Ha Giang Loop map and route planner first.

Best Cao Bang Loop Itinerary (2 or 3 Days)

Both tours start the evening before at Loop Hostel Cao Bang, with the first night included. Riding begins the next morning.

 The 2-day Loop

Paper-making in Phuc Sen and a swim in the Quay Son River on day one, then Nguom Ngao Cave, Ban Gioc by bamboo raft and a night at Nasan Green Farm. Day two covers the Vinh Quy grass hills and Angel Eye Mountain, back in Cao Bang by mid-afternoon. Best if you’re short on time. See the Cao Bang 2 Days tour.

 The 3-day Loop

Adds Khau Coc Cha Pass and the Bao Lac highlands. Day one heads west past the Vu Nong viewpoint and the Truc Lung Pan bamboo forest to a homestay in Bao Lac. Day two is the big one: 14 hairpins, a jungle trek to a lookout above them, lunch in Ha Quang, then Ban Gioc and a riverside farmstay. Day three covers Vinh Quy and Angel Eye Mountain. See the Cao Bang 3 Days tour.

Top Places to Visit on the Cao Bang Loop

  • Ban Gioc Waterfall: go by bamboo raft, late afternoon if you can

  • Khau Coc Cha Pass (3-day tour): 14 hairpins, best seen from the lookout

  • Nguom Ngao Cave (2-day tour): a 30-minute eco-trek inside the mountain

  • Vinh Quy Grass Hills: rolling green ridges, the “mini Switzerland” of the northeast

  • Angel Eye Mountain: a limestone peak with a round hole through its centre

 Motorbike, Easy Rider or Jeep?

Self Ride costs $94 for 2 days and $129 for 3 days, and you need riding experience. Easy Rider costs $129 and $179, with a local driver, which is the easiest choice if you haven’t ridden mountain roads. A jeep costs $657 and $1,178 per jeep, for 2 to 4 people. An 8% VAT is added at checkout.

Best Time to Visit the Cao Bang Loop

May to September for Ban Gioc at full flow, though expect the odd shower. March to April and October have fewer rains and still good scenery. Rain covers are provided.

Who Is the Cao Bang Loop Suitable For?

It suits riders who’ve already done Ha Giang, anyone who wants quieter roads, and fans of waterfalls, caves and wide views. Two spare days are enough, and beginners are fine on Easy Rider. It’s a weaker fit if you only have time for one province and want the best-known viewpoints. Then the Ha Giang 4 Days tour is the better call.
